મહાત્મા ગાંધી: સત્ય અને અહિંસાના પથદર્શક
ભારતની આઝાદીના ઇતિહાસમાં જો કોઈ એક નામ સુવર્ણ અક્ષરે અંકિત હોય, તો તે છે મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી. જેમને આપણે સૌ પ્રેમથી ‘બાપુ’ અથવા ‘મહાત્મા’ તરીકે ઓળખીએ છીએ. GujaratiLexicon અનુસાર, ગાંધીજીનો જન્મ 2 ઓક્ટોબર 1869 ના રોજ ગુજરાતના પોરબંદરમાં થયો હતો.

ગાંધીજીના પિતા કરમચંદ ગાંધી પોરબંદર રાજ્યના દીવાન હતા અને માતા પૂતળીબાઈ અત્યંત ધાર્મિક સ્ત્રી હતા. તેમના સરળ જીવન પર માતાના વિચારોનો ઊંડો પ્રભાવ હતો. ઉચ્ચ અભ્યાસ માટે તેઓ લંડન ગયા અને ત્યાંથી વકીલાતની ડિગ્રી મેળવી ભારત પરત ફર્યા.

ગાંધીજીએ પોતાનું આખું જીવન સત્યની શોધમાં વિતાવ્યું હતું. તેમની આત્મકથા ‘સત્યના પ્રયોગો’ વિશ્વની શ્રેષ્ઠ આત્મકથાઓમાંની એક ગણાય છે. આ પુસ્તકમાં તેમણે પોતાની ભૂલો અને તેમાંથી શીખેલા પાઠોનું નિખાલસ વર્ણન કર્યું છે.

સ્વાતંત્ર્ય સંગ્રામ અને આંદોલનો
ગાંધીજીએ દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકામાં રંગભેદ સામે લડત આપી અને ત્યારબાદ ભારત આવીને આઝાદીની લડતનું નેતૃત્વ સંભાળ્યું. તેમણે અહિંસા અને સત્યાગ્રહને પોતાના મુખ્ય શસ્ત્રો બનાવ્યા.
- સાબરમતી આશ્રમ: અમદાવાદમાં સાબરમતી નદીના કિનારે તેમણે આશ્રમ સ્થાપ્યો, જે સ્વાતંત્ર્ય લડતનું કેન્દ્ર બન્યો.
- દાંડી કૂચ: મીઠાના અન્યાયી કાયદાનો ભંગ કરવા માટે તેમણે 12 માર્ચ 1930 ના રોજ સાબરમતીથી દાંડી સુધીની ઐતિહાસિક પદયાત્રા કરી હતી.
- અસહકાર આંદોલન: અંગ્રેજી શાસન સામે ભારતીયોને એકજૂથ કરવા તેમણે અનેક શાંતિપૂર્ણ આંદોલનો કર્યા.

બાપુનો સંદેશ
ગાંધીજી માનતા હતા કે, “તમે વિશ્વમાં જે પરિવર્તન જોવા માંગો છો તે પરિવર્તન પહેલા તમારામાં લાવો.”. તેમણે માત્ર રાજકીય આઝાદી જ નહીં, પણ અસ્પૃશ્યતા નિવારણ, સ્ત્રી સન્માન અને ખાદી દ્વારા સ્વાવલંબનનો પણ સંદેશ આપ્યો.
આજે પણ ગાંધીજીના વિચારો માત્ર ભારત માટે જ નહીં, પણ સમગ્ર વિશ્વ માટે શાંતિ અને ન્યાયનો માર્ગ બતાવે છે.
